Phonics Teaching at Monkhouse Primary

Reading is the key that unlocks the whole curriculum so the ability to decode is essential.  Here at Monkhouse Primary, we use Read Write Inc (RWI) to teach our children to read and spell.  This is an inclusive literacy programme teaching synthetic phonics.  Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend them to read and segment them for spelling.

RWI sessions occur every day as the continuity and pace of the programme is key to accelerating the progress of children’s reading development.  To ensure this progress, the children are assessed regularly and placed into small groups according to their ability rather than age.

Teaching and learning of RWI is based on the 5 P’s.

  • Praise – pupils learn quickly in a positive environment.

  • Pace – fast pace of the lessons are essential in order to maintain focus and enjoyment.

  • Purpose – every part of a session has a specific purpose.

  • Passion – it’s the energy, enthusiasm and passion that teachers put into a lesson that bring the teaching and learning to life!

  • Participation – a strong feature of RWI is partner work and ‘teaching’ each other.  Research has shown that we learn 70% of what we talk about with our partner and 90% of what we teach.
